BASIC is in ROM, press Control-Reset to break into BASIC. There is no operating system in firmware, so DOS, ProDOS or GS/OS has to be loaded from somewhere.

You didn't mention what version of the IIGS you have, or how much RAM it's equipped with.
To get the most out of your GS, you'll eventually want to invest in the following items: more RAM (assuming your machine is 'stock') and some kind of mass storage, like of the compact flash hard drive options available.
