The HP-35 (the first HP scientific calculator (that Woz also help
create and later sold to fund Apple)) in its initial incarnation had a
"red dot" that appeared when you powered it up.  It was a low-tech red
dot in that it was just paint on the power slider/switch that was
exposed via a small hole in the case.

The "red dot" was later removed because it was redundant.  If the
calculator was on, the LEDs would be lit.  Unless of course the
rechargeable battery was drained.

So, tell your friends that it was placed there by Woz in remembrance
of his beloved HP-35.
