Low Res on IIGS Monitor

I have an Apple RGB monitor connected to my IIGS.  The display seems fine
but when I run Appleworks on it I can barely see the letters and I have to
change the display to a white background and black letters to see.  Also I
have the Print Shop for the IIGS it seems dark also and I cannot see what I
am typing on the screen I have to preview to see if I spelled everything
right.  I am wondering if it is the monitor it has been doing this since I
got it but the finder looks fine I have no trouble with seeing it. The
brightness control was missing on it but it came off and went inside the
monitor and I put it back on and it is on its highest setting.  I am
wondering if it is the monitor  or a setting on the IIGS?  I also noticed
the monitor was dirty inside if I took my can of air and cleaned it would it
help any?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks
