Re: Off Topic: U.S.A Blackouts & blah, blah, balh -> (was Re: Web Browser for IIgs)
Sheldon Simms replied in another off topic (non-Apple II related) thread:
<<Speaking of which... I've lived most of my life in Atlanta, Georgia,
U.S.A. and, although we never had California-style blackouts, power
outages were fairly regular occurances when there was a storm, or
if there was too much wind, or a car ran into a telephone pole, etc.
etc. That was just part of life and people expected that the power
would go out 3 or 4 times per year, at the least, due to one thing
or another out of the control of the utility company.
Well I've lived 2 years now in Germany and there has never been a
power outage. None. I really feel like the US has a lot to learn
about management of power distribution systems. The California situation
especially is really pathetic. Let's be clear, the situation there has nothing
to do with deregulation. The electricity market is more deregulated in Germany
that it is in California, but there are, like I said, no power outages here.>>
And, I reply...Well isn't that extra special. I live in California and I've
seen no power problems or rolling black-outs occur here where
I live now in Leggett, California. But, then - there isn't that many people in
Leggett, CA (population 198). Seems the rolling black-out issue is with highly
populated areas of California.
California has always been the first to set trends with things in the USA and
even around the world. Guess the rest of the USA can expect this power crisis
thing to spread around to the rest of the country and even the rest of the
world too - during this spring and summer.
I'd suspect when that starts happening it will mess the Internet up to no end.
Even my having a portable solar powered laptop with a wireless modem to use
won't solve the problem. Even if I was in Germany with it - when the power
goes down anywhere - locally - chances are fair that where ever you are
accessing the Internet from -- be it with an apple II, Mac, PC or whatever -
you can't access any server-site that has no power to run it.
A lot of people need to learn a lot about all the aspects of the management of
power distribution systems - even within the Apple II community and even in
Germany.
Cheers,
Tom
