I have a similar setup at work.  Macs on ethernet, Mac LCs w/Apple2 cards
on localtalk, 2 IIe's and a IIGS on localtalk, an Apple Laserwriter
12/640, LocalTalk Imagewriter, and a HP Laserwriter 2100M on localtalk.
Localtalk bridge is running on a Mac PowerPC 8150 Workgroup server.

All systems can see the printers etc. although I haven't tried printing to
the HP 2100 from a IIe or the IIGS yet.  The IIe's, MacLC's in IIe mode,
and the IIGS in ProDOS8 print fine to the Apple LW 12/640 via the
Imagewriter emulator.  The 12/640 used to be a Laserwriter IINT, and
everything including the IIGS in GS/OS printed fine to the NT via
localtalk.  But GS/OS (System 6.0.1) wouldn't print to the LW 12/640.
(The error msg is probably the one you quoted).

The "fix" is to replace the Laserwriter driver in 6.0.1 with the
Laserwriter driver from 6.0 (or maybe 5.0.4).  Apple made the driver in
6.0.1 very specific to Apple Laserwriters, of which the NT was current
vintage.  The LW IIf and IIg and 12/640 etc. post-date the 6.0.1 driver
and that driver doesn't work with the newer printers.  The 6.0 driver was
more generic and works fine with the newer Laserwriter printers.

Sorry for the long post, which may not help your problem.  I couldn't
decide if your problem is GS/OS related or both GS/OS and ProDOS related.
If it is both, I haven't helped yet, but you will have problems in GS/OS
once you have the other problems fixed.  (Since you say you can download
the imagewriter emulator, I assume you are using the GS/OS Netprinter
control panel and thus your problem is the Laserwriter driver.  Yes the
IW emulator downloads and works fine with 6.0.1 when using p8, but
printing from GS/OS does _not_!)
