Q: 6503 processor in Enhanced //e (platnum)?

I recently recovered some Apple //e (Platnum) systems from a school district
that was going to haul them to the dump.  I am cleaning them up testing them to
make sure they work.  I noticed there are "6503" processors in a few of these
instead of a "65C02".  I mothballed my //e before the Platnum came out and I
haven't been following the Apple line closely in all those years.  Could some
one (or more) tell me what the differences are between the '65C02" and this
"6503" are?  Apple Diagnostics 2.1 sees it as an Enhanced //e either way.
