HOWTO->obtain CDROM functionality for a IIe

Greetings !

What is required for ............

    1-burning CDROM images that are accessible by a IIe

    2-hardware that will access  CDROMs so burned, I assume, hopefully
wrongly, Apple proprietary only

    3-software that will enable 1 & 2

    4-where can 2 & 3 be obtained and what are reasonable prices

I am hoping that it might be possible to run programs from the CDROM. Is
this incorrect ? If so, is a SCSI harddrive the only alternative ?
Again, if so, are proprietary Apple harddrives still made and if not are
there alternatives ?
