It's a pretty good emu. Not sure why you got a window full of "@" chars.
One possibility is that you got a messed up or partial Reset. (The latest
version of AppleWin adds nice display features; but, you may have to hold down
ALT and click the Apple button several times to get a boot.)

An earlier version is available which boots reliably with just a click on
the Apple button. It's on TikTok at http://abandonwarering.com/tiktok/ (click
on "Utilities"). The file is Applewin_date1999_02_22_v1_10_1.zip .

If you run AppleWorks (e.g. v2.x) on your emu you'll have a Text editor.
If you need to move PC files onto a disk image, check out DskIn and FishWings.
For links, see http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FLUTILS.html#007 .

Another way to go is to buy the Oasis emulator. It's supposed to include a
util for moving stuff to/from disk images. For emu links, see
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2APPLICS.html#003 .
