Re: Urgent Help Needed with //GS CD-ROM Issues..
I have a few different CD-ROM readers, and I was surprised recently to
see that the oldest of them, a single speed which requires use of a
caddy, couldn't read a single CD-R I fed into it.
At first, I thought that maybe one of my SCSI drivers was hosed, or that
maybe the HFS.FST had problems, or that maybe my system somehow became
corrupted, or that maybe the CD reader itself had died, or that maybe
even my High Speed SCSI card was zapped.
But...if I put in a non-CD-R, it was recognized. So, I ended up attaching
a slightly newer 2x CD-ROM reader to my IIGS, and that recognized and
mounted all the CD-Rs that the 1x couldn't.
If it matters, none of my CD-ROMs are Apple's brand.
I've read in Andy McFadden's CD-R FAQ that some of the older CD players
just can't read/recognize CD-Rs. So, whether it's correct or not I don't
know, but my assumption was that my 1x CD-ROM reader was manufactured
before CD-Rs even existed, and that's why it didn't recognize them.
In any case, if older audio CD players can't recognize audio CD-Rs, there
may be some older CD-ROM readers that can't either.
Then again, I think my 2x reader only cost $19, so I'm not really
concerned about the 1x's problems.
