It's not actually the newer Macs that can't handle 800k, it's the USB
floppy drives. The main problem is that t's a single speed drive like
PC floppy drives. As you're likely aware the Apple II and earlier
Macs used a variable speed drive to cram 800k instead of 720k
on a floppy.  When Apple went to high density drives they decided
on going with a more compatibleformatting so we have 1440k disks
instead of 1600k
With currant Macs I think the problem is't as much the lack of an 800k
drive but lack of any way to easily transfer information unless you're
one of the few with an Apple II ethernet card.
My solution is an SE30 with an ethernet card. It'll write 800k or 1.4mb
disks but I tend to use it more as sort of an Appletalk "hub". It hooks up
to a newer Mac via ethernet and a IIgs and IIe with workstation card
via localtalk. Using Localtak Bridge on the SE30 and with file sharing
on on both the G3 and SE30, the IIgs will see both machines hard drives.
SE30s are cheap and don't take up much space.
