Re: GSTape! Alge Blaster Plus! More Manuals! The fate of Ultima VI?!?

The fate of Ultima VI?

Well, it took some digging to find it on the site:

IIGS.

Too bad! :-(

Thanks, Antoine Vignau, for taking the effort to find out.

Historical csa2 threads on Ultima VI:

"Here is ORIGIN's OFFICIAL current position, from Greg Malone, Marketing and
Communications Manager for Origin:

In response to the many inquiries being made by Apple users regarding
whether
or not ULTIMA VI:The False Prophet is going to be made available on the
Apple
platform, I'd like to fill you in on ORIGIN's current tt view.

Unlike all previous ULTIMA's, number 6 is the first one which was completely
designed and implemented on the IBM PC (& compatibles) first. When Richard
"Lord British" Garriott learned that he could make use of the hugely growing
IBM compatible market which has machines featuring 640K RAM, a hard drive,
and
256-color graphics, he couldn't resist the opportunity to as he put it,
"...create the ultimate ULTIMA! " Couple that with the ever disturbing fact
that the Apple market is continuing to disintegrate at an alarming rate
(beginning with base support from Apple Computer, Inc., and trickling down
to
the Apple-specific magazines and even to disaffected Apple users), it is li
ttle wonder that the question about developing ULTIMA on the Apple has
arisen."

"Well, the answer seems to be that no software company is that interesting
in
publishing (or writing, for that matter) games for the Apple IIGS right now.

The fact that someone as good a Brian isn't working somewhere writing
incredible things for our machine goes to show you what a sorry state things
are in the Apple II world. It doesn't fare too much better for other
talented
65816 programmers either. Most of the jobs that are out there are for
working
on Nintendo games, not Apple II stuff. Dispicable, if you ask me...."

"I thank you for your kind comments about my programming abilities on the
IIgs,
but unfortunately I don't think that Origin has any desire to do Ultima for
the IIgs specifically. I met with Origin about 2 months ago for an informal
job interview, and for the 1 1/2 hours I was there, they continuously ragged
on the IIgs and mocked me - I felt like a peon."

"Origin's problem is that they're convinced that the investment would be
worthwhile only if an 8-bit Apple II product resulted, not a IIGS-specific
product. This has to do with perceptions of the Apple II software market
that are widespread in the software publishing industry; I don't say they
are correct.

Obviously it would be painful to cram Ultima VI into an 8-bit Apple II,
and the result would not be up to modern customer expectations (especially
those of IIGS users!). I fully agree with Origin's reluctance to work on
an 8-bit Apple II version of Ultima VI, but I would like to see a IIGS
version."

"If you look carefully in the Programs Plus's ad in the December issue
of A+/Incider (yeah, the issue with the Mac), you'll notice that under
Origin Systems, there's Ultima VI!!"
