help, apple ii disk controller

I have an apple ii disk controller and when I start up my apple iie the
drive lights no longer come on though I can hear them spinning.  Is the
disk controller bad or are the drives bad?  I got some other apple drives
from a friend but they need some kind of adapter in order for me to attach
them to the disk ii controller?  Are the drives I have unidisk drives?  I
wasn't aware that I needed an adapter of some sort to attach the drives?
