Slot 2 is the usual slot for a modem. However, you may want to get an
external modem for use with your IIgs. You can definitely get a
faster modem that way. Besides, I don't think that the best IIgs
communications programs will support any of the internal modems.

Check out:

and follow the Downloads link then the Apple System Software link and
agree to Apple's license agreement, you'll be at a page with the Apple
IIgs System Software and, more importantly for you, some Modem Starter
Kit disks.
If you don't have a way to turn these files into real disks for you
Apple II then you can use the link near the top of the download page
to get disks mailed to you.
However, the communications programs on those disks are all 8 bit
programs, I believe. The best IIgs communications program is called
Spectrum and is available from Shareware Solutions II. Check out:

It might be easier and faster to just use a null-modem connection
between your machines. Unless your G4 doesn't have a serial port.

There are unzip utilities for the Apple II that will allow you to
unpack ZIP files but most of the legal archives available for the
Apple II are in ShrinkIt format which is a archival utility that is
included on the Modem Starter Kits I mentioned above. All you need to
do is transfer the ShrinkIt file to your Apple II and unpack it using
either ShrinkIt or GSHK.
There are various utilities that will allow you to convert disk images
back into real disks on your Apple II. However, please keep in mind
that most disk images on the internet are commercial software that are
being illegally distributed.
