My further thoughts...at this point, I would suspect the floppy drive in
your LC has a problem with its media sensor/circuit, since that is how the
Mac determines what type of floppy is in the drive. Usually when the sensor
fails (often from dust blocking its path) it refuses to acknowledge the
presence of an HD floppy - your problem is of course the opposite - so
something else in this circuit may have failed.
