One way is the battery. The ROM1 version used a battery that requires a 
wire cutters and a special soldered-on or slip-on battery for a 
replacement. Nite-Owl made a good number of replacements. The ROM3 
version has the same 3.6 volt 1/2 AA battery that the Macs use and it 
ison its side under a black cover that will allow you to see the 
battery. Most originals had some purple on them. The cover is easy 
enough to remove and replace.
