The GUI for the Apple IIgs is a completely new-from-the-ground-up, 16 bit
operating system, GS/OS. "Vaguely similar" is a gross understatement. It
is much more intuitive to use than Windows, and a lot more glitch free.
It is indeed similar in this regard to earlier versions of MacOS, except
that GS/OS has ALWAYS been in color whereas the early versions of MacOS
were black and white only. It does automatically switch to ProDOS 8 when
the icon of a ProDOS 8 program such as AppleWorks is double clicked or
started in some other way. Apple DOS 3.3 programs do have to be started
by booting the operating system.
Sorry, couldn't help setting the record straight.
