Game Endings
--> Had more to meander about - but my other post was already
getting too long. Just wonderin' - does anyone remember
finishing certain A2 games and feeling more `letdown'
than with other games? I don't mean the "Is that all
there is too it?" type of letdown - I mean you were
enjoying playing some certain A2 game and lovin' every
minute of it - looking forward to the next time you fired
up your A2 and booted-up the game, so you could re-enter
that `universe' and continue this enjoyable play and then
one night; suddenly, you're at the end of the game and
you finally manage to blast the main monster/villain
(saving after every single round your group managed to
survive!!) - and then . . . the game's finished.
You sit there, in silence, with your friend(s) or by
yourself - and that euphoria, tension and uncertainty
you were feeling just 10 minutes earlier; has suddenly
evaporated. Of course there's that feeling of satisfaction;
you beat it. You won that game. You conquered the main
bad guy, you finished-off all the quests. But there's
also that realization, that you won't be playing that
game again. You know you can't look forward to booting-up
that game anymore. That's the kind of `let-down' I mean.
There were three of us playing "Proving Grounds of the Mad
Overlord". My wife on keyboard, our friend doing the mapping
and me keeping track of levels/stats and of who had what
spells/weapons/armour/items/potions, etc. We played that
game for a year and a half (hey - we all worked and had kids)
playing one night per week and though we felt ecstatic with
finishing the game - we also realized: no more Gaming. What
a let down. Of course, there was Knight of Diamonds after
that - but we didn't feel as `let-down' when we finished
Proving Grounds. More `seasoned' gamers? Perhaps. But I
can still recall the dual feelings of euphoria and let-down
After Wiz I, but much less so with Wiz II, etc.
The Bard's Tale series gave us mostly the same strong feelings;
as well as Dark Heart of Uukrul - but it wasn't really there
for us after any of the Might & Magic series.
So, does anyone else have certain games that made them feel
great and let-down in the same way?
