Are you booting original DOS 3.3 disks (games etc.), or are they backup copies?
The grinding noise that you hear on bootup may be an indication that the disk
you are booting is an attempt at copying a copy-protected disk. Many DOS 3.3
disks were copy-protected, and attempts to make backup copies resulted in
problems such as the noise you had on bootup on the //c. If they are original
DOS 3.3 disks, they should boot fine. Just a theory.
