A plain serial cable, such as you would use to connect a modem to your PC,
connects Receive to Receive and Transmit to Transmit, so connecting it
between two computers won't work, as they will be both listening on the same
line, and both sending on the same line. What you need is called a
null-modem, which can be a little box you connect in line with your serial
cable, or it can be a new cable which replaces the old one. This one swaps
the lines over, so that Receive goes to Transmit and Transmit goes to
Receive. This way the data can be written by one serial port and read by the
other one.
There are one or two ZIP programs for the Apple, but you probably would find
it easier to transport them uncompressed. However if the programs use an
Apple II-based format like ShrinkIt then you should extract them on the
Apple. (Providing you have the ShrinkIt program.)
