"Shortly" after the introduction of the IIGS, Apple started selling a "IIe
to IIGS" upgrade kit which consists of the bottom chassis, IIGS logic board
(with IIe style power connector) and a new top cover. Becausing of the (IMO)
anal pricing policy (it cost nearly as much as a brand new IIGS at the time)
Apple did not sell very many of this "upgrade kit."

What you describe sounded remarkably like someone bought into one of these
"upgrade kit."
