When I was using Netscape for the Mac, I used a program called Monica

http://www.ziggy.speedhost.com/

to do almost all of my web downloading.  It always tries to force a
binary connection for downloads and I never had a corrupted file with
it.

But, I found out now that IE5 runs better on my Mac than anything from
Netscape and it doesn't have any problems downloading any Apple II files
from the net...at least when I option-click a download link and the file
goes right to the download manager...
