You don't need to replace the Motherboard, just swap the ROMs. The
latest generation of Mac 128/512k ROMs has 800k and SCSI support
included. Apple started shipping the new ROM version somewhere in 1985.

A Mac 512Ke has the new ROMs and a 800k drive. A late Mac 128K or 512K
has the new ROM version that supports 800k, but is equipped with a 400k
drive. With an external 800k drive these machines will support 800k
disks.

Currently my Mac 128K is a "Mac 128Ke" because I have replaced the
defective 400k drive by a 800k unit. The machine boots 800k disks
without any further modifications.
