500-1000 disks probably means that quite a lot of 8-bit software is
included. For 8-bit software, you will be better off on a PC running AppleWin
or Oasis. (See http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2APPLICS.html#003 .)

Bernie is supposed to be a very good, perhaps the best, IIgs emulator.
Plus, given active support, it is likely to improve. Even so, buying a
low-end Power PC to run a IIgs emulator seems like a waste.

A ROM-01 IIgs with 4MB RAM and a hard disk will, very likely, run more
of your titles correctly than any emulator. For one thing, it will boot copy
protected diskettes (which can not be converted to disk image form). And,
depending upon your IIgs to run IIgs software does not prevent archiving any
copiable disks on your PC or on CD-ROM.

If you add a ZipGS or TransWarpGS accelerator board, you will be able to
run virtually all IIgs system, game, productivity, ... software as fast as it
needs to be run (in most cases, faster).

Unless you just want to buy a Mac, investing in IIgs improvements (e.g.
an accelerator card) and whatever PC upgrades make sense looks like the way
to get more performance for your money.

You do not need a Mac. On your IIgs you can use ASIMOV or DSK2FILE to
create disk image files for 5.25" and 3.5" diskettes.

See http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2FLUTILS.html .

Using a good telecom utility (like Spectrum) on the IIgs and Hyperterm
on the PC, you can transfer the files at 56k via a regular NULL modem
connection.
