The Apple /// joystick is not compatible with the Apple II joystick.  The 
Apple /// joystick is called the "Apple Cursor III".  The pinout, pins 1-9,
are: gnd, +5, gnd, horiz analog, button, +12, gnd, verti analog, joystick
switch.  Go figure.
