This used to be pretty close to a 'Catch 22' situation: How do you transfer the
software you need to do transfers?!

Ways to obtain getting started software on disk are discussed in the FAQs at
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/A2FAQs5MAINHALL.html#003 . A good way to 'do it
yourself' is to download and use Paul Guertin's ADT v1.22 package.

With ADT you can transfer .dsk disk images from the PC to the //e (where they
are written out to 5.25" diskettes). A bunch of Apple II software is available on
the net in disk image form. ADT will let you get DOS 3.3 and ProDOS disks with many
good Apple II utilites, games, etc.. This includes a choice of general-purpose
telecom programs which will let you transfer .sdk, .shk, and other kinds of files.
You can also get ShrinkIt v3.4 for unshrinking .sdk files to diskette.

ADT v1.22 includes the Apple //e (ADT as adt.dmp) and PC (adt.exe) parts of ADT
along with directions for transferring the Apple //e part to the //e. You can find
ADT v1.22 as ADT122.zip on USA2WUG and Tarnover at ...

http://www.grin.net/~cturley/USA2WUG/Utilities/ or
http://tarnover.dyndns.org/Comm/ .

All you need is an SSC (or compatible) serial card, a NULL modem connection to
transfer the Apple II part of ADT to your //e, and DOS 3.3 running on the //e so that
the ADT program can be saved and run. You do not need to have a terminal program
running on the //e to transfer ADT because it is sent at low speed as Text (in
adt.dmp) to the //e modem serial port (SSC)-- i.e. you do an IN#2 on the Apple //e
and the PC terminal program (e.g. Hyperterm) 'types in' the program pretty much the
same way you would and ends by sending a DOS 3.3 save command. (Again, details for
doing this transfer are included in the ADT v1.22 package.)

For more about NULL modem transfers see the FAQs at ...
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2T1TCOM.html .

     For SSC info, see ...
http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/Csa2T1TCOM.html#013 .

In case you do not have DOS 3.3, it can be transferred via a NULL modem
connection using a Text send. The target 5.25" diskette must by a DD (double density)
type. You can find DOS 3.3 Dump as dos33dmp.zip along with a companion Text
directions file on Ground and USA2WUG at ...

ftp://ground.ecn.uiowa.edu/apple2/upl2000/Mar/ or
http://www.grin.net/~cturley/USA2WUG/Utilities/ .

Once you get ADT going on your //e, a good place to find all of the basic
utilities you'll need for doing terminal transfers and dealing with the files is on
the .dsk disk images on the Ground archive at ...
