Not only that, but he had apparently memorised the object code
sufficiently to be able to type in the whole thing from memory when
staring up an Apple 1, which only had 2KB of ROM (enough for a monitor
but not a BASIC interpreter). Integer BASIC required about 5 KB of
machine code, so this is pretty impressive.
I don't remember the whole story, or why he couldn't just load it from
tape - perhaps the Apple 1 didn't have a tape interface, or no built-in
support for it?
