It wouldn't really matter if the copyright laws were changed. The new law
wouldn't apply to items covered under the old law. This would be similar
to the government simply taking the product from the copyright holder just
because it is old. I for one would not care to see the government have
that type of power. For the most part, they have too much power already
which they shouldn't have, but that is a whole different subject.
Whether anyone likes it or not, there is only one way to get the programs
legally distributable. This is to get them reclassified. Some folks are
trying to get this done now. Many more should join in and help. Perhaps
some of the energy used to lament the current situation could be applied
to this effort.
There are many different things required for this effort. Much more than
just contacting a company or individual and asking for the software to
be reclassified. Help is needed in verifying the release as the final or
best version. More help is also needed in acquiring documentation for
these programs. There are already quite a few programs which desperately
need documentation.
