I did clean the drives, and ran basic functionality tests
(read,write,verify,format) all of which worked fine.  When I try to boot
from the 5&1/4, the drive light comes on and it makes that sorta
grinding noise that I assume is a seek to the 1st track, then nothing. 
The screen says "check startup device" or something similar.  The disks
are a motley collection of things that came with the system - some
commercial, some not.  Those that say anything on the label say they are
for 128K Apple II series machines or 128K IIc or IIe or something
similar.  They are not GS specific programs, but I thought the GS would
boot itself as a IIe if that's what it found in the disk drive.
