Once you are fairly sure that you have enough RAM installed, the usual
advice seems to be to try ...
o- scrapping your Finder prefs and allowing a rebuild of Desktop
o- scrapping AppleTalk if you are not using it.
Some other tries would be to dump any old INITs and extensions and any INITs
and extensions which you do not need or especially care about. At least one
Mac user suggested scrapping ObjectSupportLib.
Something which does not seem to be mentioned often is getting rid of
any screen savers. Even so, it's a good idea. In general, you want as much as
possible to eliminate stuff that interrupts the main system or which
introduces special exceptions to normal processing.
Another area to check is your drivers for sound, video, network, etc.
hardware. One of more of these may need to be updated.
The above, of course, are pretty much things you would look into when
having problems installing a new OS on any computer. Probably, you can get
some better suggestions from current Mac users on a Mac newsgroup.
(Comp.sys.apple2 is part of the Apple II computer newsgroup hierarchy.) A
good place to ask a Mac question would be comp.sys.mac.system.
Good luck with getting System 8.6 installed on your Mac!
