Rick Steves was in Paris yesterday (on PBS) and took us through the
Louvre. We saw the Mona Lisa as well as numerous other famous works. Light
damages paintings which is why photo flashes are restricted. The lighting
in building which house old works is often dim and indirect to protect
the paintings. At places I've been. they discourage photos pointing to
the excellent ones that can be bought in the souvenir shop. Many of those
old buildings were lite by candles. The soot had disasterous effects on
ceiling artwork.
