The danger is largely from damage to the circuitboard while trying to desolder
the
old battery and solder in a new one. This is easily avoided by doing it this
way:

In the IIgs clip the battery leads close to the battery
Check the polarity and place the new battery in position with the leads running

alongside the old leads
solder the old leads to the new ones.
