Apple sources for Education/games/ cords
Hi A2ers,
A fellow BMUG member recomended your news group to me.
My wife, a high school science/math Special Ed teacher was given an A2e
and an
A2gs when she asked the school district for some computers for her class
room. I
am a train operator with no educational field-back ground.
I really had to scrounge around for plugs and cables and am short a few power
plugs for the 3 image writer dot matrix printers. No one in her
department had
ever used these ancient computers before. (I bought my 1st comp. in
1977, a
silver painted TRS-80 Level 1 Model 1, and my 2nd comp. in '81 bought a
TI/99 4a
full system (one disk drive) with a daisy wheel "Brother" typewriter + interface
+ RS232 card, and my 3rd comp. a TRS-80 Model 100 and later Model 102 Laptop
computer, then my 5th comp. was a Mac IIsi, 6th a Mac-Powerbook 190,
7th a PPC
7100/66 AV, 8th a PPC 7100/66 CD.) I had experiance with ancient
micro-computers before, but not A2's, so I volunteered to give it a try.
I have found the A2's to be much better in most ways to the TRS-80 I had had.
I liked many things about the TI machine, but the game catridge slot,
which was
used to connect to the Extention Box with the extra memory, disk drive,
etc., was
not one of them. Finally that part wore out and repairs were almost impossible
for that orphaned computer.
I used the A2 manuals to get eveything up and running except the
printers due to
power cord shortages. I am going to scrounge around the School District
for some
more, but if I do not locate any, is there a place I can get more?
I am "ah struck" that a machine as old as an Apple II still works after pugging
it in. My employeer used one for years after the transbay tube fire to
run a
database on all electric luver vents and their assosiated mile post
numbers in
what was once the longest under water rail tunnel in the world (3.6
miles long.)
The U.C. Berkeley train controller who wrote the program was taken by
the GM
(Bernard) when he headed the "Chunnel" project in the English Channel.
I was
amazed on my visits to Central Control (OCC) that in the midst of all that
computer Main Frame technology in the OCC, there was this little Apple
II working
year after year to ensure that the right response and action of the Central
Contollers for every potential and actual passenger train emergency was
displayed. Over the years many many millions of lives depended on the crutial
data put out by that small machine working in the midst of giants.
I have always wanted to use one of these machines. Now is my chance.
This time
a bunch of high school kids with everything from Cambodian War (or
another war
somewhere in the world) "shell shock" to bad cases of ADHD, OCD or other learning
disabilities will have an Apple IIe and an Apple II GS to help them
learn where
they have been assesed to be difficient.
I want to set up these two machines for word processing, math fact instruction
from the 2nd grade thru high school 12th grade and biology and general science
terms and concepts so these challenged children have a chance at passing
the new
mandated knowledge tests reqired for high school graduation. The
classroom has
been given two PC's as well with printers. One is on the school district
educational network for grading and internet access and the other is stand
alone. It might be good if these machines and my Macs at home could emulate
Apple IIe & GS software if there is such a thing.
My 8 year old daughter who visits the classroom after school said some games
would be nice too.
Any suggestions would be appriciated.
Thanks in advance.
