I've never actually seen a Micromodem III...

The Hayes Micromodem II is a combination Apple II card and a tinted
pexiglass box that sat outside of the computer. A ribbon cable
connected the two together. A telephone cable plugged directly into the
box. There's no phone handset involved with the configuration.

The Hayes Micromodem IIe is a full internal modem, with on-board
speaker. It's based on the predecessor.

Programming is the same with the two cards.
