Under the current Copyright Act, copyright attaches at the moment an
original work is fixed in a tangible medium.  Another way of saying this is
that unpublished works are protected without the necessity for the author to
take any affirmative steps other than creating the work.

Registration of a copyrighted work with the Copyright Office confers
additional benefits, including the ability to seek statutory damages.
