Evidently, there was (maybe still is) a 32-bit 65xxxx being worked on at
Western Design Center in the mid-late 1980's. However, Apple management seems
to have decided to scrap the II series a few years earlier-- probably before
release of the IIgs-- and never seems to have pushed for the 32-bit 65xxxx
microprocessor from WDC.

My impression is that WDC is satisfied with its current market and not
very interested in releasing a significant upgrade to the 65xxxx series unless
there is a commitment from some major computer maker to incorporate the larger
microprocessor.
