These are zips, right, not dips? On a zip, the pins originate from edge of
the chip and are offset, like zipper teeth. On a dip (far more common, dual
inline pin=dip) the pins originate from the bottom, and are straight across
from each other. The zips take up less space on the board, but stick out
considerably from the board. The dips take up a little more space on the
board, but rest flat against it.
If they are indeed zips, the problem may be that they are pulls, desoldered
from a board, so the pins have been trimmed and have traces of solder on
them. That was the case on the 4 X 1meg chips they sent me. The solder
traces make the surface of the pins rough, so they don't go into the sockets
as easily. Check that out. I found that a few pins folded up rather than go
into the socket, so they had to be straightened.
