There are also free public news servers: I'm using
eternal-september.org, but I've heard of others: aioe.org comes to mind.

There is also news.individual.net, which is not free but is much cheaper
than giganews.

The main thing the free or very cheap services don't have is the binary
groups but I stopped caring about them a long time ago.
