Where did you get that information?  The price hasn't been that high
for a few years now.  Here is what the registration form at
http://www.kfest.org says:

     +++  Regular Attendee rates (if you register AFTER April 15) +++

      Double room:  $275
      Single room:  $325
      Spouse rate (bring the spouse or son or daughter):  $225
      Registration only (no dorm room or meals):  $225

The double room means you are sharing a room with someone.

Single room means you get a room to yourself.

Spouse rate is if you want to bring someone along that will be staying
in the dorm and eating meals at the college but won't be attending the
sessions.

The registration only option should be pretty much self explanatory
but that price just allows you to attend all the sessions.

NOTE:  These prices are in US dollars and are for the 26th of July to
the 30th of July.  If you wish to stay in the dorm on Tuesday night it
will cost you an extra $25.  T-Shirts might still be available to
order for $15 each.
