Yup, you have a dead battery. Be thankful that the IIGS is more
forgiving than the average PC which upon forgetting all the BIOS
settings will cease to boot (assuming your IIGS hard drive is in
slot 7 it should still boot with a dead battery).
If you have a ROM 3, the battery is visible near the back of the
IIGS case right next to the power supply. It is in a holder.
Simply remove the cover of the holder, remove the battery, get
a Macintosh LC battery, then install and replace the cover.
If you have a ROM 1, things are more tricky. The battery is
soldered to the motherboard and is under the power supply.
If this is your situation, I recommend looking for a battery
holder of the right size from Radio Shack or getting one from
a dead Macintosh. Then cut the leads near the dead battery
and solder the battery holder in its place.
You can also solder the battery. I've done this before and
you only have to do it once every decade. However, you
must be careful not to apply too much heat or the battery
might explode. The beauty of the direct connection
approach is that you do not need an exact replacement.
You can install a camera lithium battery by soldering it
this way. It is likely to be cheaper and might last longer.
