To me it has little to do with the computer anymore. Some of the best
friends I have have been met while participating in the close-knit Apple II
community (some of my worst enemies too, but that's another matter :).
For example, I met Ryan Suenaga talking about Apple II computers on Genie
years ago. A couple years later, he was a groomsman in my wedding. Nearly
a dozen fellow Apple II enthusiasts were invited to my wedding, almost all
of them friends I made because of the Apple II. Indeed, I met my wife in an
online conference where we were helping fellow Apple II users with their
systems.
I rarely fire up my Apple II anymore, although I still enjoy it from time to
time, and use emulation rather more. I stick around in this community for
the sense of belonging and friendship than anything else.
Sometimes there are battles among us, and there are outcasts, and we have a
few people that sometimes seem to fall into the wacko category. But it's by
and large a friendly community, much like a family, and I'm happy to be a
part of it. We, like most communities, have our ups and downs, occasional
fights, and sometimes even people we would rather forget.
Rarely do you find people that meet fellow PC users online and strike up a
lifelong friendship. That's what makes us special, as Apple II users.
