The color display card for the Apple was needed only if you wanted to
hook up a PAL TV to it.  If you did hook up an NTSC TV instead, no
such card was needed.  The Apple II motherboard could easily be
strapped for either 525-line or 625-line mode - the former yielded
NTSC color output on the standard video connector.

Which won't give you anyt choice if you want to arrach a different
device than the ones being officially "blessed" by Apple....
