There used to be an individual that would send out a modem starter kit
disk for about $3 but I don't know if that is still available.

There has been a number of reclassified communications programs that
might work for you but I'm not sure how you can get them.  Perhaps
Shareware Solutions II or Juiced.GS has added these reclassified
titles to their disk libraries.  You could check with them to see if
they have Modem MGR, Talk Is Cheap (aka TIC) or any other decent
communications programs at these URLs:

If you at all serious about doing communications with your Apple II
you might want to consider buying ProTERM A2 which works on most
models of Apple IIs or Spectrum which is only for the IIgs.  You can
