Need help with distinguishing enhanced vs. unenhanced IIe

Hello.  I have a friend who is trying to figure out for sure if his IIe is
enhanced or not.  Besides the obvious little light button to the left of
the open apple key, is there anything else he can do to find out?  Also, I
want to know if any other software is needed to run an unenhanced versus
an enhanced IIe.  I once saw a IIe owner that needed a DOS 3.3 master disk
before playing my DOS 3.3 game.  Is this because his IIe was unenhanced?
What about Prodos programs like Appleworks and Copy II Plus or System
Utilities?  Thank you very much for your help.
