Apple2 Ethernet

I am aware that at one point Apple and/or third parties had intended to
introduce an ethernet card for the a2e and especially the a2gs. Things even
went so far as an initial run of pcb's were produced. Nowadays though, only
a handful of the prototypes exist, and the production boards have
'dissappeared'. Are they in a landfill somewhere that I can go dig them up?
Are they hidden in a warehouse, just waiting for someone to forget, and let
them be bought up surplus? What's the deal?

If they are truly gone for good, how complex would it be to design and build
a homemade one? Is anyone interested in such a thing, and would the
community appreciate it if such schematics were made available? Better yet,
would people be willing to buy them? I mean, they mass produce ethernet
chipsets, to the point that most of the active components are in a single
package, and cost is around $8-12 per unit. Even were a lonely nerd like
myself able to design and build the board, is anyone willing to write
software for it???
