Although I do connect to the net every single day using Marinetti, I
also actually like having a dial up unix shell account. After all, I do
continue to use an Apple IIGS.
foxvalley.net offers both shell and PPP dial ups, nationwide, for less
than $16/month, so I now have the best of both worlds.
Although I've only been on foxvalley.net about a month, I have to say that
I'm quite impressed. Apparently, customer service is very important to
this ISP...soon after I activated my account, I had to ask tech support a
question that involved an older version of software they had installed.
But, rather than just answer my question, they went ahead and installed
the latest and greatest version (which made my question obsolete).
I'd had the same ISP for many years, and although their service was
spotty, I did get used to it. It did take me a day or two to make
foxvalley.net work the way I was used to, but hey, that's what .login and
.profile files are for ;-)
The newsfeed is unbelievable. I think on crl, I got maybe 20% of news
articles. On foxvalley, it's not 100%, but close.
It's my understanding that the owner of foxvalley.net is somewhat of a
unix geek, and so foxvalley is committed to offering dial up unix shell
access. Again, as an Apple II owner, that was probably the most compelling
reason to get an account here.
foxvalley.net is a small operation that's located at least 2,000 miles
away from me, but they still have a local number for me to dial.
So far, so good. I wouldn't hesitate recommending foxvalley.net. Oh, I
guess I just did ;-)
