Re: Apple and the Holy War
IMHO, Apple blew it by not acknowledging the 'home market'. After
all, they started it. I bought my first computer for my daughter's
use at home, for school work and games. The thing that sold me on
the Apple II was it's reliable use in schools. Daily abuse by
children with limited downtime speaks volumes.
After purchase though was a different story. Dealers had no clues
about system support. Since I live in a rural area, things were even
worse than the stories I read from other users. If I wanted
something done, I wound up doing it myself. If however, Apple Inc.
had listened to it's early users, they would have known what the
market needed. Quality machines with expandability and decent
support. This is the same thing that computer owners expect today.
The reliability and speed of many later PC systems and the rush of
people who purchased 'personal computers' in the last decade are the
reason for the PC standard everywhere. It's a given that most
businesses would purchase IBM it was the primary supplier of
business machines. However many of them later purchased a compatible
system which offered better support or a great price cut. IBM merely
set the standards, it was the clones and cut rate prices which
sealed the standard in businesses.
As for software, Microsoft already had that pretty well in hand.
MsDos was easier for the average user to learn. Then came Windows.
In all of this, all I ever saw for the Mac was it's use in graphics
oriented businesses and some school offices and many of these were
being replaced by the PC.
If only Apple had put all that R&D into the II series instead of the
Mac, the II might be the standard home/school system still.
