You should see how slowly an IBM AT 8Mhz runs an old
GUI on CGA or Hercules compared to a stock IIGS running
GS/OS.  Or try unzipping a file on the AT and comparing
the speed to using Angel to unzip a file on a stock IIGS.

I also don't doubt that a G4 would outperform a Pentium III
of a given clock speed.  But yes, while design makes
a difference, you can only take it so far.  A 500Mhz G4
can match or even outperform a 750Mhz Pentium III in
some tasks but the 1Ghz Athlon is a pretty big jump in
clock speed.
