Re: Apple II Mail Group faqs
Frequently asked questions about The Apple II Mail Group:
Q. I thought I joined, but I never received any e-mail.
A. There are several possible reasons:
- You didn't give your full, real name. Please try again.
- You didn't give your correct e-mail address. Please try again.
We have occasionally experienced trouble with .mil and .au
addresses.
You may have pressed the Return (Enter) key too soon.
Use the mouse or TAB to complete the form, then submit.
- You are a Macintosh user asking a Mac question. This is an Apple II
board.
- We vaguely suspect you are giving a false name.
Usually we don't care, but let's be honest with each other.
- Allow one week for messages to start, in case we're on vacation.
- If all else fails, send e-mail directly to A2MG@aol.com.
Q. I thought I joined, but I only received one or two messages.
A. You may have checked "One-time question" (which is the default) instead
of "Join." Please try again.
Q. I received messages for a few months, then they stopped.
A. We don't allow lurkers, takers, or freeloaders. If you join and then stay
silent for 2-3 months, we have no way of knowing if you are still reading
your e-mail. Your name will be deleted from the mailing list without any
notice.
Ask a question, be an expert. Be sure to use the same e-mail address that
you joined with to send messages. Please sign all messages with your real
name.
Current TEXAS II subscribers will not be removed from the mailing list, so
they have less to worry about, I suppose.
Q. All right, I was a dud and you deleted me. Can I re-join now?
A. No.
Q. How do I send a question or reply to the Apple II Mail Group?
A. There are several ways:
- Send e-mail directly to A2MG@aol.com.
- Use your browser's Reply feature to reply to any Mail Group message
you've already received.
The subject does not matter.
Keep quotes to a minimum. If you quote the entire message back to
us, we will not be pleased.
- Use the message form above and click "Already a member."
Q. I'd like to join, but I do not use AppleWorks.
A. The Apple II Mail Group covers all Apple II subjects. AppleWorks
questions account for less than half.
On some days, there are no AppleWorks questions at all. Novice
questions are welcome.
Q. I'd like to join, but I do not subscribe to TEXAS II or any other Apple
II magazine.
A. You do not have to subscribe to anything to be a member of the Apple II
Mail Group.
There is no fee for joining this group.
Occasionally (very rarely, in fact) we will post information about new
product releases or items for sale.
Once or twice a year we have a free "Items for sale" forum or auction,
in which members can sell computer-related wares.
Q. I'd like to join, but I don't like to get a lot of e-mail.
A. You will receive e-mail about once a day. Sometimes we will skip a few
days, depending on activity. Most of the e-mail is extremely interesting
Apple II stuff. It's up to you to decide whether it is useful to you. You
can always Join, then Un-Join if you think it is too much.
Q. How many members does the Apple II Mail Group have?
A. Currently, about 150.
Q. How to I get access to TEXAS II's private download area?
A. You may request access soon after you join the Apple II Mail Group.
Q. I'd like to join, but I don't want to get spammed.
A. This usually isn't a problem. There's no way you can get spammed as a
result of this mailing list. It is managed by a human, and is never given to
anyone else. Mail is sent as "blind carbon copies," so all you see is your
e-mail address, if any. When you post messages to the group, your e-mail
address is shown. It is possible you could get a personal reply to your
question as a result, but we have never had anyone use this mail group to
send bulk mail, to our knowledge.
All messages are screened and headers are removed before posting to the
group as a message digest. Messages are sent in e-mail, and are never posted
in public . If we ever did post in public, we would ask permission first.
All group messages are copyrighted. Therefore, no one would be allowed to
repeat your message or use your name in any other forum, public or private,
without asking permission. If they did, they would be removed from the group
mailing list.
Q. How do I change the e-mail address where I wish to receive messages?
A. Send e-mail, or use the form above, to send the information. Be sure to
give both the old and the new address, so we can delete the old and add the
new. If you will be offline for a brief time, just let us know what you want
us to do.
Q. Just who is "us," anyway?
A. The Apple II Mail Group is managed by Beverly Cadieux, writer of the
TEXAS II newsletters and disks for users of AppleWorks 5.1; also programmer
and exclusive publisher of numerous articles and accessories for AppleWorks
5.1 for the Apple II, including Y2K updates for AppleWorks (all versions),
as well as Y2K fixes for ProSel, Shrinkit, Sneeze, other Apple II
utilities, and various Apple II financial programs. Our members and experts
include other publishers, programmers, and knowledgeable Apple II users.
Q. This is not for me. How do I unjoin the mailing list?
There are several ways:
- Send e-mail directly to A2MG@aol.com and simply say "Unjoin." No
explanation is necessary.
- Use the message form above and click "Unjoin."
