Yes, I think I *did* do that while I was investigating the OS. 
However, I followed your advice and downloaded another 6.0.1 System
disk from Apples FTP site, and I still have the same problem. Is there

Check the size of your PRODOS file.
If size is 35 , then you have Prodos8;
If size is 5, then you have the Prodos you want.
