Cache memory is used in the background by GS/OS to remember stuff
about recently accessed files. This helps speed up later accesses (to
the files that are remembered) during a session. Except for this use by
GS/OS, the memory assigned as cache is 'lost' to the user.
In general, the more RAM assigned as cache the faster files are
accessed during a session. However, at some point, additional cache
makes very little difference.
Cache makes the biggest difference when accessing files under
GS/OS on slow devices like diskettes. It makes the least difference when
working with files on fast devices like a hard disk.
On a IIgs with a hard disk, a good size for cache RAM seems to be
around 32k-- the idea being that you are not doing enough diskette
access under GS/OS to get a good speed payoff for more cache RAM.
